The 2027 Audi RS6 Gets a PHEV Powertrain and Returns as a Saloon for the First Time Since 2010

The 2027 Audi RS6 Gets a PHEV Powertrain and Returns as a Saloon for the First Time Since 2010

The Audi RS6 Avant has spent the better part of a decade as the definitive answer to a question that most sensible adults quietly ask: what if a practical family estate could genuinely embarrass a sports car? The current C8 generation, launched in 2019 with a 630-horsepower twin-turbo V8, has been winning over drivers who want serious performance without sacrificing the school run, the ski trip, or a seven-day European tour. Next year, the C9 generation arrives to take things further.

The new RS6 is expected to make its official debut in March 2027, built on Audi's new ninth-generation A6 platform. Spy photography of test cars at the Nurburgring, reported on PistonHeads and Motor1, has confirmed the familiar RS treatment is present: wider bodywork, prominent air intakes, large alloys, and the centrally positioned oval exhaust tips that have become an RS calling card.

Two Body Styles for the First Time Since 2010

Perhaps the most striking development is the return of the RS6 as a saloon alongside the Avant. Audi discontinued the RS6 saloon at the end of the C6 generation in 2010, leaving the estate as the sole choice for the past two model cycles. That changes with the C9. A sleeker four-door body joins the range, putting the RS6 name directly against both the BMW M5 and BMW M5 Touring in a way the estate-only C8 never could.

For most buyers, the Avant will remain the obvious choice. The estate body is where the RS6 character lives, combining the performance credentials with genuinely usable boot space. But the return of a saloon option gives the range a breadth it has lacked for fifteen years.

Plug-In Hybrid Power Throughout

Audi Sport has confirmed that the C9 RS6 will use plug-in hybrid technology, following the path opened by the new RS5 estate which became Audi Sport's first electrified performance model earlier in 2026. Reports from multiple sources suggest a combined output of around 730 horsepower, though the exact engine configuration remains officially unconfirmed ahead of the reveal. Some sources point to a turbocharged V6 paired with a large electric motor, while others suggest Audi may retain a V8 hybrid setup at the RS6 level given the car's positioning.

Audi Sport's technical team has described the package as a genuinely convincing combination. Beyond the outright performance figure, the plug-in hybrid setup carries a practical advantage for UK company car drivers, since the lower official CO2 output that comes with PHEV technology can make a substantial difference to benefit-in-kind tax bills. A significant share of RS6 Avant buyers take the car on a company arrangement, so this matters more than it might appear from the outside.

What UK Buyers Should Expect

The current RS6 Avant sits at around £90,000 to order. The C9 generation will almost certainly arrive above that, reflecting both the hybrid hardware and the substantial investment Audi has made in the new A6 platform. Official UK pricing is not expected until closer to the March 2027 reveal.

For anyone currently in a C8 RS6 and approaching the end of a lease or finance term, the C9 is worth watching closely before committing to another cycle. The combination of two body styles, a cleaner tax profile from the hybrid powertrain, and what looks on paper like a meaningful performance step makes the next generation look like a genuine upgrade rather than an incremental update.
